July 2018: Tyron Pedrochi is employed by Wairarapa Moana Farm, following a Whānau Ora plan with paeārahi, Leanne Karauna last year. The 16-year-old realised school wasn’t the best fit for him and turned to Leanne to find alternatives to formal education. General manager of Wairarapa Moana, Nick Hume says Tyron is doing really well.
“He’s a great asset to the team and we keep reminding ourselves he is only 16 because of his maturity.”
Nick says it was the assistance Tyron received from Te Arawa Whānau Ora that put him in a prime employable position with the farm.
It was understanding the work Leanne did with him and understanding the clear goals that he wanted. He was motivated to get ahead and he had the support of his whānau which certainly made a big difference.
“We’ve said to him, he can work his way up to ranks of management, it’s a 5-6 year cycle and I can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t achieve this.”
Tyron is loving his job and says his grandfather is particularly proud as he is a shareholder in the farm land.
“It’s primo actually. Just being able to work and keep out of mischief,” he says.
“At the moment [my duties involve] feeding the cows, cleaning around the farms but we’ll be coming into calving season soon and that will be busy.”
He says he has clear goals on where he wants to be in the industry.
“At the moment my boss wants me to do the Agriculture ITO (course) and eventually be 2IC. I would recommend this work, I’m working with a good crew and they look after me, we’re always having fun.”
