Paeārahi Profile | Terere Aoake – Te Waiariki Purea Trust

October 2015: Being the change you want to see in the world is what drives Terere Aoake to make a difference. Terere loves working with young people and helping them discover and create new opportunities for themselves and hopes that her new paeārahi role at Te Waiariki Purea Trust will help do this.

“My passion is helping rangatahi achieve whatever goals and aspirations they set for themselves, no matter how big the dream is” explains Terere.

Terere comes to Te Arawa Whānau Ora with a diverse set of skills, she has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago, she also has worked as a Marketing Coordinator for Te Puia New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and most recently spent time as the Midland Kia ora Hauora Liaison Assistant where she encouraged rangatahi to take up health studies at tertiary level while helping them create pathways into a career in health.

Critical to her work is knowing how to engage with rangatahi. “The right type of communication is important and what I have found with rangatahi is that more than anything they need someone to listen and help with their path which is what I enjoy doing.”

Te Arawa Whānau Ora is one key vehicle which Terere believes can help rangatahi achieve their goals.

“Whānau Ora to me is a chance to help rangatahi succeed by giving them the power to dream and then helping them plan those dreams. No dream is to big or unachievable all they need is a base plan to make it successful” says Terere.

Do you have a dream? Do you want to achieve that dream? If so, please contact Terere at whanauora@twptnz.org.nz
