The 42-year-old had been disqualified from driving for 13 months before signing-up on the programme. He says he’d been driving long before he first sat his learner licence when he was 25-years-old, but it was becoming expensive getting cars impounded.
Shilo knew he had to get his licence reinstated and enrolled on the programme. He was surprised by how easy it was.
“It enlightened me quite a bit because it’s been ages since I had to sit my licence, but they made learning all the new rules heaps easier. They explained how it all goes and showed us how to use the tablets. I’m not very clever in that sense – I’m a hands-on sort of fulla and the technology stuff doesn’t really tickle my fancy, unless you text or ring – but they were really helpful.
“I did my test, passed, went for my drive a couple of weeks ago, and got it from there. I was fully licensed before I got disqualified, so I was able to go straight to a full licence, but had to do the drive to become fully licenced again.”
Shilo is now working on roadworks for a local civil engineering company, and he’s rapt that his life is back on track.
“Because I got my licence, I cracked myself a job and everything is coming back into plan again. Having a licence helps heaps because we do a lot of civil work, and need to be able to drive.
“I’ve been telling a few of my nephews and nieces who don’t have their licence to check out the course.”
