November 2016: We would also like to acknowledge the other finalists - Korowai Aroha Health Centre, Okere Falls Store and Rotorua Lakes Council, as well as all of the organisations who entered.
They are all doing amazing things to ensure their workplaces are healthy places to be, and their staff are looked after and feel valued.
Healthy Families Rotorua Settings Manager Pollyanne Taare says the aim of the Health & Wellness award was to acknowledge workplaces that encourage, support and promote good nutrition, physical activity, alcohol reduction, and smokefree environments and lifestyles.
The Ngongotaha Early Learning Centre are an outstanding local business who are very proactive and practice wellness across the board. They have nutrition, physical activity, smoking, recycling, and health and safety policies; run Healthy Heart Award and Fuelled4life programmes; and are breastfeeding friendly," she says.
"Drinking 'water only' is encouraged in the work environment, and a lot of emphasis is placed on staff being physically active with the children as much as possible during the day."
Pollyanne says the centre also encourages whānau to participate in all events, and are active in the community through the Rotorua Lakes Council's Paper4trees programme. "The Health & Wellness Award had the most entries of any category in the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards, and the Ngongotaha Early Learning Centre are a shining example of the way in which many local organisations are creating health promoting environments where people live, learn, work and play."
