The 12 Community Trusts were originally established under the Trustee Banks Restructuring Act 1988 to take ownership of government shares in the trustee banks. The Trusts were established to exist in perpetuity, with their funds being applied to beneficial purposes on behalf of the community in their area or region.
The Trusts now operate under the Community Trusts Act 1999 and the terms of their respective trust deeds. Most Trusts sold their various bank shares and now manage a large and diversified portfolios of investments.
The Trusts make grants for charitable, philanthropic, recreational and other purposes that are beneficial to the community, principally in the area or region of each trust as indicated in its deed.
