A rangatahi 3×3 basketball tournament is open for registrations and is led by youth, for youth.

Facilitated by Antony Williams of Tuara ki Rise, a youth service under Te Waiariki Purea Trust, the tournament will be held at Toi Ohomai Recreation Centre next month.

“The 3 on 3 basketball event is just one part of an entire programme,” Antony says.

“What I do is work with four different communities, Western Heights, Fordlands, Koutu and Eastside and select one leader in those communities to coach basketball teams. The coaches are between 20 and 24-years-old, they go through coaching clinics with Sports Bay of Plenty and they also go through unit standards from the Youth Focus Certificate.”

Another component of the programme is to go into the communities with the coaches and host one hour training sessions with rangatahi.

The 3×3 Basketball Tournament will be held on June 23 and is for young people 15 years and older. To register or for businesses interested in sponsoring the event, contact Antony on the Tuara ki RISE Facebook page.
